In Tim Keller’s book Ministries of Mercy, the Call of the Jericho Road, he points us to Luke 10: 25-37, The Parable of the Good Samaritan, as the basis of our mandate as Christians to carry out the vital ministry of mercy to people in need of shelter, assistance, medical care, and friendship. He also demonstrates in the book that caring for needy people is the job of every believer and is fundamental to Christian living.
At New Covenant Fellowship we believe that Mercy Ministries is an essential ministry carried out by every member of our church. Under the advisement and care of the Diaconate and Heart Ministries, this ministry performs many services. Some of the services are performed on a yearly basis:
- Operation Valentine | A ministry to widows and widowers.
- Easter Basket Ministry | Provides gift cards and gifts to financially and spiritually struggling families and individuals.
- Mother’s Day Ministry | Provides token gifts to mothers and fathers of single parent homes.
- Back to School Ministry | Provides gift cards to financially struggling families and single parents and caregivers to help ease the burden of purchasing school clothes and supplies for their children.
- Thanksgiving Ministry | Provides gift cards and token gifts to financially struggling families and individuals, and also partners with Bethesda Mission to provide over 300 community food bags for the Thanksgiving season.
- Operation Christmas Wreath | Provides beautifully decorated wreaths or sashes for the front doors of the homes of widows, widowers and those in need of encouragement and cheer.
- Operation Angel | Provides gifts and gift cards to needy families and individuals during the Christmas season so they can provide food and gifts for their own families.
- Confidential Help | Mercy Ministries provides support in many ways to struggling individuals and families on an as-needed basis as well. Every contact is handled with respect and an assurance of confidentiality. Referrals are often made to social agencies with staff, programs and funding in place to aid those in need. New Hope Ministries, Bethesda Mission, and the Capital Area Pregnancy Center are just three of the partnering agencies which receive support from NCF.
We also provide clothing, household items, tires, heating oil, utility payments, emergency lodging expenses, transportation expenses, counseling costs, etc., on an as-needed basis.
